Chemistry Postdoc Jonas Rein receives Nobel Laureate Signature Award from the American Chemical Society
Rein, a postdoctoral researcher in the Elkin and Coley groups, was awarded for his work as a graduate student at Cornell.
Jonas Rein, a Postdoctoral Researcher in the labs of D. Reid (1941) and Barbara J. Weedon Career Development Assistant Professor of Chemistry Masha Elkin, as well as Class of 1957 Career Development Professor of Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Science Connor Coley, has been named the recipient of the Nobel Laureate Signature Award from the American Chemical Society.
Established in 1978, the Nobel Laureate Signature Award for a Graduate Student in Chemistry recognizes an outstanding graduate student and their preceptor(s) in the field of chemistry, broadly defined. Rein received the award for his graduate work in Professor Song Lin’s group at Cornell University, where he completed his Ph.D. prior to joining MIT. His research focused on developing technological innovations for high-throughput parallel reaction screening in electrosynthesis—an emerging field that uses electricity to construct chemical bonds efficiently—and on establishing asymmetric oxoammonium catalysis as a novel method for selectively derivatizing carbon–hydrogen bonds in complex molecules.
At MIT, Rein’s postdoctoral research with the Elkin and Coley groups integrates organic chemistry and data science to systematically identify gaps in current synthetic methods and accelerate the discovery of new laboratory solutions.
