We’ve included some frequently asked questions about the ChemFlex option. If you have additional questions not covered here please email us at chemistryeducation@mit.edu.
I'm doing a double major. Can I count classes towards ChemFlex AND my second major?
Yes, you may count up to three subjects for both ChemFlex and a major in another subject.
I'm minoring in another subject. Can I count classes towards ChemFlex AND my minor?
Yes, you may count up to two subjects for both ChemFlex and a minor in another subject.
Can I use subjects for both my HASS Concentration and my Elective Focus?
No, your HASS Concentration and Elective Focus for ChemFlex cannot overlap at all.
What will my diploma say?
You will receive a degree in Chemistry and this is also what will be printed on your diploma. ChemFlex is not a separate degree; it is an option within the Chemistry major. The name of your elective focus will not be listed on your diploma or MIT academic record.
Am I restricted to a set list of Focus Areas?
No! While we offer some suggestions here, you are not limited to those options. Your focus can be tailored to your specific interests, either within chemistry or another discipline. You will need to select a minimum of 36 units of coursework which form an intellectually coherent unit in an area, then create a name for the focus. The subjects do not need to all be in the same department. The focus area will be subject to the approval of the department.
How do I select the ChemFlex option?
Please submit the online form here with information about your proposed focus area. Your plan will be reviewed by the department.
Is there a deadline to select the ChemFlex option?
Yes – the Add date for each term is also the deadline to submit the online form with your proposed focus area. Please consult the MIT academic calendar for this date. If you have extenuating circumstances related to these deadlines, please contact Jennifer Weisman in the Chemistry Education Office (jweisman@mit.edu).
