Whitney Hess joins the Department of Chemistry as Director of the Undergraduate Teaching Laboratory

In this role, Hess (PhD '17) will oversee the daily operations of the lab and support undergraduate lab-based learning.

Dr. Whitney R. Hess (PhD ’17) will return to he Department of Chemistry as the next Director of the Undergraduate Teaching Laboratory (UGTL).

Hess completed her undergraduate studies at Idaho State University before earning her PhD from the MIT Department of Chemistry in 2017 as a member (and Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Representative) of the Bawendi Lab. Hess then served as the EHS Coordinator for the Microsystems Technology Laboratories (MTL) and MIT.nano. She was later promoted to Manager of Safety Systems and Programs at MIT.nano before joining Northeastern University as the Assistant Director & Chemical Hygiene Officer in their Office of Academic and Research Safety.

Hess, who will succeed former UGTL Director John Dolhun (PhD ’73) upon his retirement, will oversee the daily operations of the lab, support undergraduate lab-based learning, and work closely with faculty, staff, and students to continue advancing academic excellence.
