Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Week is a time dedicated to connecting members of the MIT community through small acts of kindness.

RAK Week is a time dedicated to connecting members of the MIT community through small acts of kindness. We hope to not only encourage people to connect with each other, but also to connect with support resources on campus. RAK Week is a fun, light-hearted week meant to encourage us to support one another.

Check out the agenda below for information on the Department of Chemistry-sponsored RAK Week events open to all Chemistry staff, faculty, and students. All members of the department are encouraged to participate in this highly spirited and enjoyable week!

Monday, March 11, 2024 – RAK Week Tech Cash Cards

Stop by the Chem Ed office (6-205) beginning at 10AM on Monday, March 11 while supplies last to pick up a $10 Tech Cash card with which to do something nice for another person.

Tuesday, March 12, 2024 – Chemistry Wall of Kindness

Visit the Chemistry Kindness Wall outside of 6-205 from 10AM–4PM on Tuesday, March 12 to leave an uplifting note on the bulletin board. Writing supplies will be provided, just bring your own positivity!

Wednesday, March 13, 2024 – Succulents

Beginning at 10AM while supplies last, come to Chemistry Headquarters (18-393) or the Chemistry Education Office (6-205) and pick up a miniature potted succulent to give to someone to brighten their day and desk area.

Thursday, March 14, 2024 – Pi Day

Swing by a pie station in the Chem Ed office (6-205) from 10AM–12:30PM to pick up individual pie-themed treats to celebrate Pi Day.

Friday, March 15, 2024 – Snack Break

Come to the Chem Ed office (6-205) from 10AM–4PM to grab some snacks. Sweet and savory treats will be provided. Bring one for a friend to brighten up their day!

RAK Week is also a great opportunity to nominate your fellow Department of Chemistry members for other recognition awards.

Department of Chemistry Spot Award

Spot Awards are intended to acknowledge and demonstrate appreciation and recognition for the exceptional contributions of individuals and teams, large or small. The monetary value of these awards is relatively small, but their value is immeasurable.  Nominations can be made at any time and award-winners will receive a token of your appreciation soon after. Nominate a member of the Chemistry Community for a Spot Award today!!

MIT Staff Awards

Recognition is a critical part of a culture where everyone feels valued and respected. You can contribute to that culture by taking advantage of the many options to recognize MIT staff through the Institute’s recognition program.

  • The MIT Staff Award for Distinction in Service: The MIT Staff Award for Distinction in Service will be given annually to a staff member at MIT whose service to the Institute results in positive lasting impact on MIT’s community.
  • The Gordon Y. Billard Award: The Gordon Y. Billard Award is an individual annual award for a staff member, faculty member, or MIT-affiliated individual who has given “special service of outstanding merit performed for the Institute.”

MIT Student Awards

The MIT Student Awards Convocation is one of MIT’s largest awards ceremony, drawing on offices, departments, and people from across the Institute including the arts, athletics, student life, academics, and students.

Nominations for the 2024 Student Awards Convocation are now open! Submit a nomination at the MIT Student Awards website.

All are welcome to join the awards ceremony, which will be held on May 8, 2024 at 4 pm in the Samberg Center, in building E52.
