Gilliard and Kulik Honored with the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers

Categories: Awards, Faculty

The PECASE is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on outstanding scientists and engineers early in their careers.

Robert J. Gilliard, Jr., the Novartis Associate Professor of Chemistry, and Heather J. Kulik, the Lammot du Pont Professor of Chemical Engineering and Professor of Chemistry, were two of the nearly 400 scientists and engineers honored with the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on outstanding scientists and engineers early in their careers, by President Joe Biden.

Established by President Clinton in 1996, PECASE recognizes scientists and engineers who show exceptional potential for leadership early in their research careers. The award recognizes innovative and far-reaching developments in science and technology, expands awareness of careers in science and engineering, recognizes the scientific missions of participating agencies, enhances connections between research and impacts on society, and highlights the importance of science and technology for our nation’s future.

Gilliard and Kulik are both funded by the National Science Foundation.

The Gilliard Lab is engaged in energy-relevant chemical synthesis at the interface of inorganic and organic chemistry that impacts the discovery of new chemical reagents and the design of redox-active and/or luminescent molecular materials.

The Kulik Group leverages multi-scale modeling, electronic structure calculations, and machine learning for the discovery of new molecules and mechanisms in a range of materials from metal-organic frameworks to enzymes and organometallics.
