Members of the Class of 2019 received their degrees and doctoral hoods on Thursday, June 6, 2019.

On Thursday, June 6, 2019, the Department of Chemistry presented 37 PhD candidates with their doctoral hoods at the Investiture of Doctoral Hoods and Degree Conferral Ceremony. This year’s new class of doctors were treated to an inspiring keynote speech by Chemistry Alumnus Squire Booker (PhD ’94), the Evan Pugh Professor of chemistry and of biochemistry and molecular biology and Eberly Family Distinguished Chair in Science at Penn State University. The tradition of inviting an alumni guest speaker to the Investiture of Doctoral Hoods began in 2015, and engages MIT faculty and doctoral students in the selection process.

Following the ceremony, a reception was held in the lobby of Building 18 for the doctoral candidates and their families. Guests gathered in the sunny June weather and enjoyed an array of tea sandwiches, desserts, salads, and refreshing iced beverages.

The Department of Chemistry is immensely proud of the commendable efforts and achievements of its PhD recipients, and all were happy to celebrate their accomplishments.
