38 PhD Candidates Receive Doctoral Hoods at the 2018 Hooding Ceremony
PhD recipients of the Class of 2018 received their doctoral hoods on Thursday, June 7, 2018.
On Thursday, June 7, 2018, the Department of Chemistry presented 38 PhD candidates with their doctoral hoods at the Investiture of Doctoral Hoods, an event held each year, the day before Commencement exercises. The 2018 ceremony featured Candis Callison SM ’02 PhD ’10, a scholar at the University of British Columbia and an award-winning journalist, as its guest speaker. The tradition of inviting an alumni guest speaker to the Investiture of Doctoral Hoods began in 2015, and engages MIT faculty and doctoral students in the selection process.
In her keynote speech at the ceremony, Callison called upon the doctoral graduates to better the world in which they live. “The contributions you can make with your PhD can amplify some kinds of data, collaborations, problems, and solutions over others,” said Callison. “Should you choose, your work and your research can shift society toward better systems and processes, which make the world a more just, more fair place for all of us to live in.”
Following the ceremony, a reception was held in the lobby of Building 18 for the doctoral candidates and their families. Guests gathered in the sunny June weather and enjoyed an array of tea sandwiches, decadent desserts, hors d’oeurves, and refreshing iced beverages.
The Department is immensely proud of the commendable efforts and achievements of its PhD recipients, and all were happy to celebrate their accomplishments.
