The Nature Index released their 2017 tables for the world's top institutions, and has ranked the MIT Department of Chemistry first out of all United States Institutions based on data from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016.

MIT as a whole was ranked third in the United States, and sixth globally.

The Nature Index is a database of author affiliation information collated from research articles published in an independently selected group of 68 high-quality science journals. The database is compiled by Nature Research. The Nature Index provides a close to real-time proxy for high-quality research output at the institutional, national and regional level. To establish their annual tables, The Nature Index tracks contributions to articles published in a group of highly selective science journals, chosen by an independent group of active researchers.
